I had the pleasure of working with one of the coast's premier florist recently at a wedding here on the MS Gulf Coast and have the distinct pleasure of spotlighting her unique talent and floral services here:
Katie Harris is the owner of The Bohemian Gypsy Florals! She is 41 years old, lives in Biloxi, Ms with her husband and 2 year old daughter and custom makes florals for weddings.
Katie tells me she has been in the wedding industry for 23 years now and got her start doing makeup for brides and their wedding parties, and then tried her hand in the floral aspect of the industry and loves it and I have been doing it for the last 6 years now.
"I was inspired to start my own business basically because I knew I was a leader, and had that mentality. My late father always dreamed of starting his own business, but never was able to make that happen, so I wanted to honor him by doing it! I offer all things wedding or event flowers!!! From bouquets and boutonnières to custom floral installations.... I do it all. My most popular service is definitely wedding party bouquets!"
So do you offer any customized options and packages? "Yes, I offer customizable packages and orders!"
How long have you been in the floral business? "23 years in the wedding business. 6 doing flowers."
I know there are so many florists on the coast...what sets you apart from others? "I believe it is the experience and true love for what I do. It is truly my passion. I love being a part of such a special day, and I just love LOVE."
Can you share a memorable experience or a success story from your work? "All of them really. Each wedding is so different, and I’ve been blessed with some pretty amazing clients."
How do you work with clients to understand their needs and preferences? "I offer floral consultations and a one on one experience designing their perfect wedding flowers."
So Katie, what do you enjoy most about working with your clients? "Everything! Being a part of one of the most important days of their lives is an honor to me."
It seems that trends are always changing...what are some of the current ones? "Color is definitely the trend!! The more colorful the better!"
What advice do you have for clients when choosing a florist? "Choose the person who will go the extra mile to bring your vision to life!"
How do you stay updated with the latest trends and developments in your field? "I’m constantly watching videos, reading latest floral trends and techniques, and following all of the top florists in the world!"
What do you enjoy most about your work? "Absolutely everything, but I think seeing everything come together on wedding day is my fave."
Keeping a balance of your professional and personal life is tough...so how do you do you do it? "It’s a challenge! I have a 2 year old!!! But with God all things are possible!!"
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of your floral business? "Spending time with my husband and daughter, I love to shop!!! And I love interior design and decorating my home."
Your work is amazing Katie, let's talk about your furture plans for The Bohemian Gypsy Florals.
"I want to build a bigger and more successful business that my daughter will run one day if she chooses!"
Are there any new services or products you plan to introduce soon and how do you envision the growth of your business in the next few years? "Ceremony and reception rentals and I hope it doubles or triples!!"
I know social experiences are the way to showcase your work to potential clients who may be interested in hiring you...what advice would you give about the insights on your work? "Stay dedicated, and never give up! Keep evolving and moving forward. Stay in your own lane, there’s plenty of room for you there."
What motivates you to keep improving and growing your business? "My daughter and her financial stability in the future and hopefully her love of floral artistry as much as I do!!"
And finally, do you have any upcoming events or promotions you’d like to share? "I have a big bridal expo in July here in Biloxi, and then gearing up for fall wedding season!"
